Coaching is like having your own inbuilt success mechanism it keeps you focused on your goals and helps you adjust your course when required to insure you still get to your destination.
The late Maxwell Maltz, an American cosmetic surgeon devised a theory called Psycho-Cybernetics, which believed that we all have a built-in automatic success mechanism that is similar to the way a heat-seeking missile operates.
At the start the heat-seeking missile doesn’t know the exact location of the target so it can’t plan the whole journey. But it does know what its target is, and so it sets off in the general direction towards it.
If the missile starts to veer away from the target, the computer (like a good coach) keeps the missile in check by continually providing new data so that the focus remains on the target.
Maltz believe that people operate the same that if we have identified our target, then we can trust that our inbuilt success mechanism to guide us towards it. Of course, when we are working towards a goal, we will make the odd mistake, or things might not go quite according to plan but like the heat seeking missile, a coach will help keep you on track to ensure your reach your destination.
If you don’t have a goal or a plan to aim towards, well it is easy to be like a heat seeking missile without a target you move around, zigging zagging around hoping to bump into something that works or feels right.
Coaching in simple terms will help you identify your target, take aim and fire.
